Trayvon Martin lived in Miami Gardens, Fla., with his mother. In February 2012, Martin was shot and killed by neighborhood watch captain, George Zimmerman, while he was visiting his father in Sanford, Fla.
Zimmerman was not originally charged with the shooting death of Martin. After an online petition received 1.3 million signatures, charges for second-degree murder were announced by a Florida state attorney. The trial resulted in an acquittal for Zimmerman.
The shooting of Martin gained national attention and a comment from President Barack Obama. Zimmerman’s use of the Stand Your Ground defense was controversial and sparked debates about gun laws.
