Charles Krauthammer had an accident that left him paralyzed at the age of 22. Diving into a swimming pool, Krauthammer hit his head on the bottom, breaking his cervical vertebrae and severing his spinal cord.
He had skipped classes at Harvard that morning to play tennis with a friend. On their way back, the two stopped by the pool for a quick swim. Krauthammer was hospitalized for 14 months after the accident and has been confined to a wheelchair ever since. He continued his medical studies and graduated with his class, earning his medical degree in 1975. Charles Krauthammer was a Pulitzer Prize-winning syndicated columnist, author, political commentator and board-certified psychiatrist. Krauthammer passed away in 2018 from small intestine cancer.
