Cyber crime is any crime committed using a computer or similar device. This includes a broad range of criminal activity, ranging from credit card fraud and identity theft to child pornography.
Cyber crime falls into one of two categories: crimes that target a computer user and crimes facilitated by the use of computer networks. The first type includes hacking or keystroke loggers, phishing and malicious software infection. The second type uses chat rooms and other online tools to facilitate crime, such as terrorists planning attacks or cyber stalking. It is not unusual for a cyber crime to fall into both categories. For instance, in an identity theft case, a hacker installs a keystroke logger on a computer to steal identity information, then sells that information through online markets.
