As of 2014, the president of India is Shri Pranab Mukherjee. President Mukherjee took office in 2012, following Pratibha Patil, who was the first woman to become president of India. In Hindi, the title of president is often referred to as “Rashtrapati,” which means “lord of the realm.”
Mukherjee was born in 1935 in Mirati, a small village in West Bengal. His father was also involved in politics and served as a leader in India’s Congress. President Mukherjee received a law degree and went on to become a professor and journalist. In 1973, he was appointed to his first political post as minister of state for finance. He then served several years in Parliament prior to being elected president.
