Crime Stoppers USA is a community based crime solving program in the United States, comprised of many local chapters across the country. Each local Crime Stoppers program is a non-profit organization and receives all information through anonymous tips, ensuring the citizen's privacy and safety is protected to the utmost extent.
In some cases, an award of up to $1,000 is provided to an anonymous tipster who provides information leading to an arrest. The potential of a reward, along with the anonymity provided, are two ways in which Crime Stoppers tries to combat some of the issues law enforcement faces when trying to solve a crime; one issue being a citizen's fear of retaliation. The first Crime Stoppers program began on September 8, 1976, in a partnership of members of a local community, media and law enforcement.
