As of 2015, the Polk County Assessor is Randy Ripperger. According to the Assessor's webpage, his office is open from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and is located at 111 Court Avenue #195, Des Moines, Iowa.

The Assessor only handles the determining of a property's current market value. The Assessor's office provides a large portion of this information to the public, including selling prices and property characteristics. For those dissatisfied with their assessments, it is possible to appeal by filing a written protest with the Board of Review between April 7th and May 5th of the current year. The Board of Review consists of 10 appointed members who operate outside the influence of the Assessor's office, and collectively they have the authorization to increase or decrease the value of any assessment brought forward to them. Likewise, any Board of Review decision can be appealed to the Property Assessment Appeal Board, and any Appeal Board decision can be taken to District Court, if the appellant so desires.
