The MSHSAA conducts postseason competition in as many as six classes depending on schools' student population and the number of teams in a sport. There is only Class 1 for 8-man football but six classes for 11-man football. Girls' softball has four classes for fall competition but one in the spring. Realignment of classes and districts occurs every two years.
The Missouri state football championship games are known as the Show-Me Bowl and the basketball championships are called the Show-Me Showdown. Both are named for the state's slogan, the Show-Me State.
The Missouri State High School Activities Association first organized in 1926. The association became integrated in 1952 when it accepted high schools from the Missouri Negro Interscholastic Athletic Association.
