Some common types of modern military aircraft in 2015 include the Sikorsky S-70, the Lockheed Martin F-16, the Mil Mi-18 and the Lockheed Martin C-130. These modern aircraft rank among the most widely-used by militaries around the world.
The Sikorsky S-70 helicopter is most commonly used by the U.S. military, though the model is successful both domestically and internationally. The U.S. Army has more than 2,150 of the helicopters, and the U.S. Navy has nearly 500. The Sikorsky S-70 operates in 23 national militaries around the world.
While Lockheed Martin produces newer models, the company’s F-16 is the most popular fighter jet in the world. The U.S. operates more than 2,200 of the classic aircraft, and 28 countries in total have used the plane throughout its more than four decades of operation. Contracts with other global militaries ensure the planes are manufactured until at least 2017.
The Russian-made Mil Mi-18 transport helicopter is another of the most widely-used aircraft in the world, with 78 nations around the world possessing at least one of the copters. Russia itself only operates 518 of the aircraft, representing just 21 percent of the global total.
Also known as the Hercules, Lockheed Martin’s C-130 has been in use for over 60 years, and the aircraft is a vital part of transport operations. The U.S. military operates 549 of the planes, along with 64 other nations around the world.
