There are two ways to claim weekly unemployment benefits in New York: online, using the issued NY.GOV ID, or by touch-tone telephone, by calling the TEL-SERVICE. Both the online and telephone options are available in English and Spanish. Unemployment weeks begin on Mondays and end on Sundays. To claim unemployment benefits for a week without work:

  1. Make the claim
  2. The claim must be made between the Sunday at the end of that week and the following Saturday.

  3. Write to the New York State Department of Labor
  4. If this deadline is missed, claimants can write to New York State Department of Labor, Central Support Unit, PO Box 15130, Albany, NY 12212.

  5. Include identifying information
  6. This letter must include the claimant's name, address, phone number, Social Security number, dates for which credit is being requested and a reason for failing to claim during that period.

  7. Ensure the claim is made by the unemployed
  8. It is a legal requirement that all claims for weekly unemployment benefits must be made by claimants themselves.
