The 402 area code originally served as the area code for all of Nebraska. In 1954, the code was split, with area code 308 being assigned to the western part of the state. The amount of numbers available with the 402 area code combination was almost exhausted by 2010. An additional area code of 531 was established to help serve the 402 service area and the eastern part of Nebraska.
The addition of a new area code to a geographic area with an established area code is referred to as an area code overlay. The 531 area code was approved by the Nebraska Public Service Commission (NPSC). Local residents in the 402 or 531 area code regions must include the area code when making local calls. The additional area code was a proactive move to prevent the exhaustion of phone numbers for the eastern part of Nebraska. The changes did not affect the 911 emergency system.Learn more about Public Records
