There are many organizations, including Toys For Tots and the Salvation Army, that provide Christmas programs for needy families. These programs provide Christmas gifts for children, food for a holiday meal and more and are funded in various ways, sometimes through government funding and others through community participation.
The following are some programs that offer assistance to low-income families during the Christmas season:
- Toys For Tots is a national program that is operated by the United States Marine Corps Reserve. The purpose of the organization is to collect toy donations in each of its local communities from individuals as well as businesses. These toys are then distributed in each community where they were collected to children of less fortunate families.
- The Salvation Army is a Christian organization that has been helping those in need since 1865. They provide services all year long; however, at Christmas time, they provide toys for children, meals for the entire family and clothing.
- The Angel Tree Church program assists children that may be less fortunate due to a parent being in prison by providing them gifts for Christmas. The program is part of the Prison Fellowship Organization which strives to teach these children that although they are surrounded with situations that seem hopeless, they have a world around them that cares and loves them.
There are, of course, many other organizations that help low-income families during the Christmas season. Check with a city or county to learn about government sponsored programs and local community programs that are available to those in need.
