In some areas it is permissible to take the written part of a driving license test online. For example, Florida allows prospective drivers under age 18 to take their written test online or at a local office, according to the Florida Department of Motor Vehicles.
However, other states require that driving applicants take the written test at a Department of Motor Vehicles location. For instance, in California, both new drivers and licensed drivers from other states who become California citizens must go to a California DMV office for the test, that agency's website states. In Pennsylvania, new drivers must go to a local Driver License Center to take the knowledge test, but new residents with valid out-of-state licenses aren't required to take a knowledge test, states the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
