To verify a professional's license status, navigate to the homepage of the relevant state's official website. If you don't know the state's website, visit USA.gov/states-and-territories, select a state from the drop-down menu, and click Go. Under State Government, click the state's name to access its official website. On the site's homepage, enter "license verification" into the search bar, which is usually located at the top of the page, and press Enter or click the search icon. The link to the verification tool is often located at the top of the search list; if it isn't, check the business, financial or commerce department section of the site, and look for license regulation details.

The American Medical Association, for example, provides an online locator that displays professional information for most physicians in the United States. Nursys.com, on the other hand, provides online verification and license lookup reports to employers and the public.Learn more about Public Records
