As of 2015, 411 is still the telephone number for local directory assistance and information in the United States and Canada. There is also a 411 website that allows users to search directories of first and last names, ZIP codes, phone numbers and local Yellow Pages entries.
Historically, directory assistance in North America was provided through both 411 and 113 phone number services. Beginning after the rise of local exchange competition and the decline in the Bell Telephone Company national monopoly, all 113 districts were gradually switched over to the 411 system. This allowed for 411 calls to be redirected to national call centers specialized in local information functions.
