To join the U.S. Navy as an enlisted sailor, a recruit must be older than 17 but younger than 35; a U.S. citizen, resident alien or registered alien; and a high school graduate or GED recipient. The initial service commitment is four years but can be longer depending on position and training. A U.S. Navy commissioned officer recruits must be 19 to 35 years old and a U.S. citizen who has received a four-year degree with exceptional grades from an accredited university. An officer’s initial service commitment is three to five years depending on position and training.
