To date, ServSafe has awarded over five million Food Protection Manager certificates. Programs are state specific, as there are different regulations and requirements in each state. The ServSafe Food Protection Manager online course is available, in English, Spanish and various other languages, for $125.00 and a voucher for the certification exam is $36.00 as of 2015.

The most popular training and certification package is a classroom course. It costs $139 and includes a study guide administered upon registration, a three hour classroom course led by a food safety expert, a half hour review period and the exam. The ServSafe Food Protection Manager certification provides the knowledge required by most restaurants to be considered for a management position.

Prometric offers an online class for preparation via a self-paced course with, on average, four to eight hours of coursework. The exam must be administered by an authorized proctor at one of the 1100 testing locations nationwide.

There are approximately 80-90 questions on the exam, and a score of 75 percent or higher is needed for certification. Generally, food managers must renew certifications every five years.
