The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration maintains a database of U.S. Coast Guard vessels that includes ship characteristics and ownership data. The U.S. Coast Guard's National Vessel Documentation Center compiles information on vessels available for use in emergencies.
The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration updates the information on its website each month and provides data on ships that are over 5 net tons and are documented by the U.S. Coast Guard. Smaller vessels are recorded by state. Researchers acquire information on a ship by entering its exact name, but the tool also returns data for up to 20 vessels if only part of a name is submitted. Queries on partial names may return an abbreviated list of up to 400 vessels.
