Police incident reports are available through the local police department or sheriff's office that issued them. A list of websites where users can request reports is available through the website PoliceReports.us. As of 2015, 28 states are affiliated with the website.
In order to get a police report, the person making the request usually needs the incident report number. This is a six-digit number assigned to every police report processed by the department. The report number can be obtained by calling the department that made the report. The copies of police reports obtained through PoliceReports.us are free to view. However, hard copies of reports that are suitable for insurance purposes may cost a small fee to retrieve from some departments.
