Fort Eustis was founded in 1918 as an army base in Newport News, Va. It began as a training facility for army artillery, and it has served as a work camp and prison. Since the end of World War II, Fort Eustis has been used as an army transportation training facility and a center for research. On October 1, 2010, Fort Eustis merged with Langley Air Force Base to become the joint base Langley-Eustis.
