Obtain a VFW membership by logging on to the Veterans of Foreign Wars website at VFW.org and completing the online application. Alternatively, visit a local VFW facility to complete the application and pay the annual or lifetime membership fee.
Veterans must meet eligibility requirements to apply for a VFW membership. As of 2016, a veteran is eligible for a membership if he is a U.S. citizen, has served in an overseas conflict and has received an honorable discharge. Eligible veterans must have received a campaign medal recognizing overseas service, served a minimum of 30 consecutive or 60 non-consecutive days in Korea, and received imminent danger pay or hostile fire pay for military service.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars offers several membership types that include an annual membership, which the member must renew each year, and a one-time lifetime membership that the member can pay on an installment plan. The benefits of obtaining a VFW membership include help with securing compensation or benefits that the veteran has earned; discounts on retail items, insurance, travel services and health care plans; as well as access to a network of resources for combat veterans. VFW members also benefit from the camaraderie of fellow veterans of war.
