A certificate of divorce is often available from the state’s department of public health, the county recorder’s office or the Superior Court in the state or county where the divorce was filed, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The process for obtaining it varies by state.
For example, in California, certified copies of divorce decrees are available from the County Recorder's office or the Superior Court in the county where the divorce occurred, states the California Department of Public Health. Additionally, a Certificate of Record is available from the Department of Public Health for divorces that occurred between 1962 and June 1984. This document includes the parties to the divorce, the filing date, the county where the divorce was filed and the court case number. A Certificate of Record is not a certified copy of the divorce decree.
