Low-income families can obtain free baby supplies by signing up for free samples, taking advantage of government programs and keeping an eye out for local and church organizations. Free samples can be found at baby-product company websites or even at the hospital. Many baby-product companies also offer discounts for signing up for email and mailing lists.

Two government programs that provide assistance to low-income families are the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program. WIC receives federal grants from the government for supplemental foods, health care referrals and nutritional education for pregnant, breastfeeding or nonbreastfeeding postpartum women. TANF focuses on helping low-income families obtain self-sufficiency by providing assistance to those families, so children can be cared for at home. It also attempts to promote job preparation and marriage, reduce out-of-wedlock pregnancies and support the formation of two-parent families. Eligibility can be checked on the official program websites.

Many communities also have local or church organizations that routinely help needy families. For example, the Freecycle Network is a community website where individuals list items they are willing to give away. The local Craigslist section also has a free section where users list things they are giving away.
