As of 2015, an annual membership to the VFW is $45 dollars, paid yearly. $1.98 of this fee covers the cost of a subscription to the VFW magazine, and the rest goes to the organization of the state that the veteran lives in, making them a member at large. Should they choose to join a post additional fees may apply.

Lifetime memberships to the VFW are valid for the entire life of a veteran and are transferable to any post. The dues are dependent on the veterans age in December of the year that they join the organization. Veterans pay either one lump sum or pay an initial fee and 11 annual payments for this membership.

Lifetime Legacy member fees are set up in three tiers, and intended for VFW members to keep giving after they have died. Fees range from $400 to $1200.
