Find the crime rate for a particular ZIP code by navigating to websites such as NeighborhoodScout.com, City-Data.com or MyLocalCrime.com, typing a ZIP code in the search field, and accessing the section that contains data pertinent to crime rates. As of 2015, NeighborhoodScout.com and City-Data.com display crime rates for specific types of crime, including robberies, assaults, murders and auto thefts, among others, while MyLocalCrime.com includes a list of the most recently committed crimes sorted by date.
On NeighborhoodScout.com, type a ZIP code in the search field, and click on the Scout Now button. Once the page loads, the website should display a map and list all neighborhoods that are located in or overlap the boundaries of the selected ZIP code. To access the crime rate data, click on a neighborhood on the map, and then click on the Crime link. The website provides information about crime rate per 1,000 residents for the state and the city that corresponds to the selected ZIP code for free, but it requires a subscription for detailed information about the selected neighborhood.
City-Data.com offers information about crime rates per 100,000 residents for free, but the downside is that it doesn't include the most recent data. To access this information, type the ZIP code in the search field, and then click on the link for the city. Alternatively, peruse the crime rate on a map by accessing the Crime section via the More button and selecting the desired state and city.
