According to the USS Saratoga Association website, the Saratoga VI launched in October 1955 and was in service until it was decommissioned in August 1994. The ship's crew did several cruises in the Mediterranean, served during the Vietnam War and participated in both Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm. During the Vietnam War, over 15,000 combat missions were accomplished. Tragedy struck when seven crew members died in a fire during a Mediterranean tour in January 1971. Twenty-one more crew members died in a ferry sinking near Haifa, Israel, in December 1990. Several pilots and aircraft were also lost during the Vietnam War.
