Block unwanted telemarketing calls by registering your phone number for free online on the National Do Not Call Registry run by the Federal Trade Commission. Alternatively, use a phone number provided by the Federal Trade Commission. Most unwanted sales calls stop within 31 days of registration.
To sign up for the National Do Not Call Registry, go to DoNotCall.gov, type in up to three phone numbers along with your email address, click Submit, check your registration message for errors, and click Register. Then go to your email inbox, and to confirm your registration, click on the link the Federal Trade Commission sends. Another form on the registry website allows verification that a phone number is on the list. Click on Submit a Complaint on the registry main page if you continue to receive unwanted sales calls after 31 days. Report telemarketing robocalls on the same online form, as these calls are all illegal unless you give prior written permission for the call.
Although the National Do Not Call Registry stops most sales calls, companies you have recently done business with or companies you have given specific permission to may still call. Additionally, the service only stops sales calls, while telephone surveys, charities, debt collection agencies, informational services and political campaign offices may continue to call.
