You can apply for Social Security online using the online application available at the official Social Security website. You need to report some personal information, such as the details of your earnings and your bank account number for direct deposit payments.
You can apply for retirement benefits, spouse's benefits, disability benefits or Medicare online through the Social Security website. You cannot apply for Supplemental Security Income, nor can you report a death or apply for survivor's benefits online.
Each benefit has its own application page, and those pages list the requirements necessary to qualify for the corresponding benefit. The pages also list the documents and information that you need in order to apply, as well as the different ways you can check the status of your application once it's been submitted. If you have previously applied for disability benefits and that application was rejected due to medical reasons, you can file an appeal online through a link provided at the Apply for Social Security Benefits page.
If you wish to apply in person, you can use the Social Security office locator to find the office nearest you. You can also call the Social Security Administration's toll-free number if you have questions regarding the application process.
