As of 2015, Freon is no longer being manufactured and cannot be bought at all in the United States, except under certain limited circumstances by certified technicians. Freon is a trademarked formula of chlorofluorocarbon, and as such it is on the Environmental Protection Agency's restricted refrigerants list.
Freon use has been slowly phased out in the United States since the 1990s. Starting in 2010, Freon manufacture and import was halted, except to service existing machines. Since 2015, sales and use of Freon have also been banned. The only exceptions are for older machines that still use Freon as a refrigerant. Prior to these bans, the only people who could buy Freon were EPA-certified technicians.
