Many individuals take advantage of the public-housing program offered by HUD. Public housing was established in order to provide safe and decent rental-housing units for low-income families that are eligible, states Benefits.gov. Public housing comes in a variety of different shapes and sizes, including scattered single-family houses to high-rise apartment buildings for elderly individuals and families.
However, there are some program requirements for public housing. It is limited to low-income families and individuals. Eligibility for this program is based on annual gross income, and individual that apply must be a U.S. citizen or have an eligible immigration status, according to Benefits.gov. All eligible applicants have their references checked by the public-housing authority through which they apply to verify past tenancy experience and behaviors. Applicants whose habits and practices are expected to have a detrimental effect on the program's reputation, the housing environment or the other tenants of the property may be denied. Individuals can begin the application process by visiting Benefits.gov.Learn more about Social Services
