The Naval Medical Center San Diego is often referred to as Balboa Hospital. The historic location of the hospital in and around Balboa Park established a connection in the minds of many San Diego locals.
The U.S. Navy first established a medical dispensary in Balboa Park, located centrally in the city of San Diego, in 1914. This was before the U.S. entered into World War I. A permanent hospital facility was opened in 1922. The present Naval Medical Center San Diego was dedicated in 1988, but the colloquial reference to the facility as Balboa Hospital has persisted through these changes.
