According to a Crime Index compiled by Numbeo, Trinidad and Tobago has one of the highest crime rates in the world, as of 2014. Trinidad and Tobago has the fifth-highest crime index, behind Afghanistan, Venezuela, Guatemala and Kenya.
In an article published in the Huffington Post on April 10, 2014, Trinidad and Tobago was not included in the list of 10 countries with the highest rates of homicide. Honduras had the highest rate, ahead of Venezuela, Belize, El Salvador and Guatemala. The U.S. Department of State considers crime in Trinidad and Tobago critical, as of 2013, but it notes that no evidence exists of foreign nationals and expatriates being specifically targeted.
