Avonte Oquendo’s remains were found in the East River in New York City in January 2014. During the search for the missing teenager, police had canvassed 468 subway stations in hopes of finding him. The teen had a fondness for trains.
Oquendo went missing on Oct. 4, 2013 when he left the school he was attending. The autistic teen was seen on surveillance video unmonitored in the moments before he walked out of the school. By the time that his teacher and other school officials alerted the assistant principal that he was missing, 18 minutes had passed. The medical examiner stated in the final report that Oquendo’s death was not suspicious. It is believed that he drowned.
