The Arizona Department of Economic Security administers the Nutrition Assistance Program. This program is the state's version of the national Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as the Food Stamp Program. The agency provides benefits through electronic debit cards rather than paper coupons.
The Arizona Nutrition Assistance program also provides services through the U.S. Department of Health's Women, Infant and Children program, and the U.S. Department of Education's National School Lunch & School Breakfast Program. Nutrition Assistance may only be used to purchase food; recipients cannot use their debit cards to purchase products such as tobacco or alcohol. People who are employed but do not make enough money to feed their families adequately may qualify for Arizona Nutrition Assistance.
