The 786 area code covers telephones in southern Florida. Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade Counties and part of Monroe County are covered by the area code.
The 786 area code was added to the 305 area code as an overlay code for Miami-Dade in 1998. It later was expanded to Broward and Palm Beach. Cities within the area code include Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood.
On June 1, 2015, the 786 area code was extended to the Florida Keys section of Monroe County. The overlay occurred after the North American Numbering Plan Administrator projected that the 305 area would run out of numbers in the second quarter of 2015.
