Those on Medicare who need help paying for prescription drugs can apply for the Extra Help program online on the U.S. Social Security Administration website, by phone or in person at a Social Security office. To participate in this program, applicants must enroll in a Medicare prescription drug program.
Those applying online are able to fill out the application in Spanish or English. If they are unable to complete the application in one sitting, they may leave the website and complete it later. The application requires access to payroll stubs, tax returns, bank account statements and Social Security statements. Applicants must also have statements from IRAs, stocks, bonds, savings bonds and other investments.
Social Security Extra Help provides financial aid to pay for premiums, deductibles and co-payments for Medicare recipients with Part D prescription drug coverage. To be eligible, applicants must live in the United States, be enrolled in Medicare Part A or B, and have income and resources within the program limits. Income and resource eligibility limits vary by year and are available at SSA.gov. People who receive Medicaid or Supplementary Security Income do not need to apply for Extra Help, as those programs already provide help with prescription drug costs.
