To qualify for SNAP benefits, applicants have to meet income, household size and citizenship criteria. The amount of income a family is allowed varies depending on household size. Household size takes into account the number of people included on an application, not necessarily the number of people living in a home.
Benefits are available to people who are U.S. citizens or immigrants with certain immigration statuses. All of the information included on the assistance application is verified. Applicants might be asked to submit supporting documentation, such as birth certificates, Social Security cards and paycheck statements.
An applicant might qualify for emergency benefits that are dispensed within seven days of applying. A normal application for food benefits is processed within 30 days after the application is submitted. Applications can be mailed at the request of an applicant.
