All Illinois residents who buy or own firearms, ammunition, stun guns or Tasers must possess valid FOID cards, explains the Illinois State Police. Out-of-state visitors do not have to have them. To complete an application, Illinois residents must provide their names, addresses, birth dates, color photos and state-issued photo ID cards. As of 2015, the FOID card application fee is $10, and a FOID card is valid for 10 years.
Applicants for FOID cards must be at least 21 years old. Those under 21 can receive FOID cards if they have parents or guardians sponsoring them who attach affidavits to the application. Members of the military stationed in Illinois and out-of-state residents who carry firearms for employment can also obtain FOID cards, according to the Illinois State Police. State and federal laws stipulate that to be eligible for FOID cards, applicants must not have any felony convictions or be narcotics addicts, illegal aliens, or mentally or developmentally disabled.Learn more about Guns & Weapons Laws
