Among the many educational grants offered by California's state government is the Cal Grant. A Cal Grant can be used to help students pay for tuition and living expenses at community colleges, universities, state schools, and qualifying technical or career schools located in California, as the California Student Aid Commission indicates. To apply, individuals must first determine which Cal Grant they wish to apply for. There are several different grants for applicants planning to attend public or private institutions, applicants who qualify as low-income, and applicants planning to attend career or technical schools.

In order to apply for one of these Cal Grants, applicants must fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (known as FAFSA) beginning January 1 for each application cycle, according to the California Student Aid Commission. Applicants must also submit a GPA verification form that can either be submitted by the school or the individual applicant. The deadline for all Cal Grant applications is March 2.
