The Automated Housing Referral Network is gradually being phased out in favor of the Homes.mil website but remains active as of September 2015. The Homes.mil site offers the same services.

AHRN does not directly place service members in housing but rather provides listings of available housing military members can apply for through the site. Private landlords who have housing outside of military bases can apply to list their residences on the site, which also lists government housing and private military housing on bases. More than 200,000 property managers are registered on the site. The service is open to veterans and retirees as well as active military members.

Some special services are available to troops on active duty, including a permanent change-of-station checklist and email advice on preparing for a move. The service also maintains a blog that includes moving and housing search tips from military spouses.

AHRN has been in operation since 2004 and is run by Runzheimer International. Users can view rental listings without an account, but members must set up an account to contact property managers.
