What Does the Acronym UNICEF Stand For?

UNICEF is the acronym for United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund. Although the organization is still known as UNICEF, the official name is now United Nations Children's Fund.

Established in 1946, UNICEF is currently active in 190 countries and territories throughout the world, working to ensure that the rights of every child are honored. UNICEF focuses on child protection and social inclusion, child survival, education, and emergencies and humanitarian action. The work it does includes:

  • Protecting children from violence, exploitation and abuse
  • Providing HIV/AIDS pediatric treatment and prevention
  • Offering free, compulsory, quality education for all children
  • Implementing immunization, nutrition and sanitation programs
  • Aiding children and their families in conflict zones
