How do you access a directory of California state prison inmates?

Quick Answer

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation maintains an online inmate locator to find the facility at which an inmate is housed. This inmate locator, which is available 24 hours a day, is free. If an inmate’s location cannot be found online, call the Department of Correction and Rehabilitation’s Identification Unit for further information at the telephone number listed on its Web page.

Navigate to the Inmate Locator Web page, and after reading the disclaimer, click the Agree button. Search for an inmate’s location by either his inmate number or last name. If searching by name, limit the search results by the inmate’s first and middle name. In the event the inmate’s full last name is not known, enter the first few letters of the last name and the locator lists all names that contain those letters.

This online search only provides the names of adult inmates currently incarcerated in a Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation facility. It may not include inmates who are new to the system or who are in transit between facilities.

The Identification Unit is available to answer questions by phone Monday through Friday, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. The unit only provides the current location of the inmate and his prison number. It does not provide release information.
