Telephone numbers with an 877 area code are toll-free, so callers are not charged to call them. Instead of the caller being charged, the person or business being called is charged for the cost of the call.
The 877 area code was released as a toll-free area code in 1998. Prior to its release, the only available toll-free area codes were 888 and 800. After its release, the Federal Communications Commission released three other toll-free area codes. The 866, 855 and 844 area codes were released in 2000, 2010 and 2014, respectively.
To obtain a toll-free number, such as an 877 number, an individual or business must contact a Responsible Organization. Responsible Organizations are the only entities with access to the SMS/800 database. Responsible Organizations can reserve a toll-free number for their clients.
