The state of Wisconsin is located in the north-central part of the United States. It shares borders with Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa and Illinois as well as Lake Michigan and Lake Superior.
Wisconsin is the 23rd largest state in terms of area, and as of 2012, it's the 20th most populous state, with an estimated population of 5,726,398. Wisconsin was a territory of the United States following the end of the American Revolution in 1783, although the British remained in control of it without much of an American presence until after the War of 1812. Wisconsin was granted statehood in 1848, making it the 30th state in the union.
