The hippopotamus directly kills more humans in Africa than any other wild animal. It is aggressive and deceptively fast-moving when defending its territory in and around water.
The hippopotamus can run as fast as 19 miles an hour and is capable of outrunning many humans. Though it may seem slow, immobile and somewhat peaceful, it can jump and is capable of killing crocodiles. Hippos have large ivory canines, which are encased in jaws that can cut a human in half.
Though the hippopotamus directly kills the most humans in Africa, it can be said that mosquitoes indirectly kill more humans through the spread of diseases, such as malaria and dengue.
