Some ways of getting current road conditions in Colorado are to call 551 or 303-639-1111, go to the COTrip website or download an official application by the Colorado Department of Transportation called "CDOT Mobile." It is also possible to subscribe to up-to-the-minute travel alert texts and emails on the website.
The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) states that the lag between real-time road conditions reported on COTrip website and the updates available on the phone line can be up to 10 minutes. This is because the weather is very changeable in Colorado, some roads are more remote than others and the office dealing with the road conditions updates only has two members on staff as of February 2015. These employees continuously watch all sources of information to compose reports on road conditions, such as National Weather Service and news. They also monitor road cameras.
As of 2015, CDOT does not publish estimated times of the roads' reopenings. This is done so that if the estimate is wrong, drivers do not take long detours and do not create more traffic jams by driving to the road that is still closed. However, CDOT provides estimated travel times for journeys down rural roads by using averaged data from a number of anonymous cars. These estimates are based on recent performance and are not indicative of the future journey times.
