Washington, D.C., is located between Virginia and Maryland on the Potomac River. Washington is a city in the District of Columbia, which is not a state. Washington has a latitude of 38°53′42″N and a longitude of 77°02′11″W. It has a total area of 69.3 square miles.
Interstates 95 and 70 travel through Washington. I-495 creates a perimeter around most of the District of Columbia. Nearby are Arlington and Alexandria, Va., both of which were once official parts of the District of Columbia. I-295 also feeds into Washington. Washington, D.C., is about 40 miles southwest of Baltimore, and about 55 miles northeast of Fredericksburg, Va.
