Vanderbilt University is located on West End Avenue in the city of Nashville, Tenn., approximately 1 mile from the downtown area. It is a private educational institution highly regarded for its specialized instruction in medicine, law, education and business.
With strong academic rankings and highly selective admissions standards, the school is also the sole private university playing sports in the Southeastern Conference. Ten schools make up Vanderbilt University, which offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees. With a staff exceeding 20,000, Vanderbilt is the largest private employer in the middle section of the state. The school was founded in 1873 with a $1 million donation from Cornelius Vanderbilt, for whom the university is named.
