Uganda is located in the eastern part of Africa. It is east of the Democratic Republic of Congo and west of Kenya. Other countries that border Uganda are South Sudan to the north, Rwanda in the southwest and Tanzania to the south.
Part of Lake Victoria sits within Uganda's southern regions and is shared with Kenya and Tanzania. The country has a land area of 146,675 square miles, 1,676 miles of which make up its land boundaries. According to a 2012 estimate, the population of Uganda is approximately 35,873,253 people, making it the second-most populous landlocked country after Ethiopia. Uganda gained independence from the British Empire on Oct. 9, 1962.
