Most of the cities serviced by Allegiant Air to Punta Gorda are small to medium-sized. More than half of them are located in the Midwestern states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa and Missouri. A few cities in states along the East Coast are also serviced. As of 2015, Springfield, Missouri is the westernmost city with service to Punta Gorda.
Allegiant Air prides itself in offering budget travel from smaller cities. The airline was founded in 1997. Its fleet is comprised exclusively of jets. The Punta Gorda Charlotte County Airport authority is located just a few miles southeast of Punta Gorda and was created in 1965 to service the Charlotte County area. In 2014, it serviced just under 500,000 passengers. The airport began as a military airfield in the 1940s and comprises about 1,800 acres. The longest of its three runways is about 7,000 feet, while remaining two runways are wider to accommodate larger planes.
