Schaller Consulting reports that the cost of the average taxi ride in Honolulu is higher than anywhere else in the country, at an average of $19.75 per ride. Schaller says that the average taxi ride in Cleveland is the least expensive in the country, and costs only $10.78 per ride.
Most taxi fares include a base fare and an additional charge based on miles traveled. Honolulu has the highest base charge of $3.00, while Cleveland and Baltimore have the lowest base charge of $1.80.
The price of a taxi fare might increase if a person travels to a popular tourist destination. Usatoday.com reports that in locations where there are more taxi cabs per capita, prices trend lower than in areas where taxi cabs are sparse. Most taxi fares include a premium if the traveler brings luggage. If a person asks a taxi to wait in a certain spot there is an added fee based on the time the driver spends waiting.
